Provocative and Timely! The Humanities at Victory Gardens Theater (Through October 4, 2026)

A controversial figure has been invited to speak at Lincoln University. Many of the students are outraged and they start a petition to cancel the event. The faculty is divided on how to handle the situation.

Zayd Ayers Dohrn (Revolution(s)) has written a very provocative and timely play. It’s very engaging and it keeps the audience of the edge of their seats waiting to see what will happen next.

Steve Pickering is superb as one of the professors who supports the event and the idea of the university as an important place for free speech. Naomi Evans is excellent as his wife, who propositions an assistant professor to sleep with her, while her husband watches. Ernest Bently is stellar as this assistant professor, who is very surprised by the offer. He is hesitant, but he is interested.

Piper Murphy is solid as one of the outraged students who starts a relationship with one of the professors. Isa Arciniegas (Love Song, How to Defend Yourself, The Wolves) is excellent as this professor, who is unsure about the relationship and also opposes the event. Derrick Sanders III is stellar as another angry student. Devaughn Asante Loman (The Ally, which is another terrific play about a controversial speaker at a college) is great as the grad student who resists the angry student trying to get him to join the protests.

Sabine Wan (The Book of Will) is very good as the school administrator dealing with all these issues. Daniil Krimer (Henry Johnson) is first-class as the controversial figure who loves the attention he receives for his ideas.

Overall, it’s an exceptional ensemble production that should not be missed!
