Exceptional! Broadway in Chicago Presents Riverdance at the Cadillac Palace Theatre (Through February 9, 2020)

Riverdance is much more than just Irish dancing. It is also a fantastic concert with fiddle, saxophone, drums, Uilleann pipes, and tin whistle. It’s incredibly beautiful and exciting music that captures the culture of Ireland. The music accompanies the dancing perfectly. As the tap dancing increases to lightning fast speed, so does the music. When all the dancers join hands and dance in a circle, the music sounds like a big party.

In the second act, a dance-off takes place between the Male Troupe and the American Tappers with a backdrop of NYC. It’s a very exciting back and forth as they push each other back and forth across the stage. The American Tappers poke fun at the Irish Dancing but then adapt it to their own style. One of the Tappers throws in some hip hop moves. It’s a cool blend of styles that would have been great to see even more.

The two principal dancers, Jason O’Neill and Maggie Darlington are exceptional and they have a lot of stage time.

Exceptional Value! Brown Paper Box Co. Presents If/Then at Athenaeum Theatre (Through February 16, 2020)

If/Then opened on March 30, 2014 on Broadway. It ran for a year on Broadway before it began a national tour on October 13, 2015. Idina Menzel played Liz on Broadway and for the first three months of the tour. And now in 2020, this big Broadway musical opens in the small Studio Three at the Athenaeum Theatre.

In the story, Elizabeth divorces her husband and moves back to New York City. She doesn’t have a job lined up yet. Thus, she has a lot of different possibilities of what she could do with her life. On one afternoon, two of her friends invite her to different events. The story splits into two stories, based on which event she chooses. These two paths diverge in many ways. She ends up with different jobs, different boyfriends, and so much more. It’s practically two plays in one!

The style of this musical is very similar to Rent and Spring Awakening. They are all fast paced with a strong focus on relationships. Also, the music is really good with strong lyrics.

IFTHENCast (1)

Amanda Giles is impressive as Elizabeth. She is on stage for nearly the full 3 hours. Bridget Adams-King is powerful as one of her best friends. Parker Guidry is hilarious as the other best friend. Michael Peters is solid as a main love interest. Matthew Fayfer is charming as her coworker. Lastly, the rest of this 12 person cast plus 4 person band are great!

Fantastic Jazz and Dancing! Porchlight Musical Theatre Presents Duke Ellington’s Sophisticated Ladies at Ruth Page Center for the Arts (Through March 6, 2020)

This show is a tribute to the late great Duke Ellington. It features Duke’s biggest hits including “Mood Indigo,” “Take the ‘A’ Train,” “I’m Beginning to See the Light,” “Hit Me With a Hot Note and Watch Me Bounce,” “Perdido,” “It Don’t Mean a Thing,” and “In a Sentimental Mood”. The set designed by Angela Weber Miller is opulent. It perfectly sets the stage for the fantastic singing by the entire cast. Lorenzo Rush Jr. (Memphis), Donica Lynn, and Lydia Burke are especially impressive. The dancing is also outstanding ranging from tap to jazz to swing. Giordano Dance Company would even be impressed. Lastly, the band plays Ellington’s music fantastically. The music draws you into a trance and then suddenly it is two hours later!

Excellent! Victory Gardens and Actors Theatre of Louisville Present How to Defend Yourself at Victory Gardens Theatre (Through February 23, 2020)

A pair of undergrad women are waiting in a gym to take a self-defense class. They are also rushing a sorority together. The two teachers enter, who are members of the sorority. The class was started because one of their sisters was the victim of sexual abuse. They are all determined to learn how to defend themselves. Later on, a quiet and shy girl awkwardly joins. At last, two fraternity brothers show up. They immediately state that they don’t support the masculine culture that lead to the abuse as they try to keep their cool being the only men.

The group really comes together and supports each other. There is a great moment when the music is cranked up for a great training scene. There is also a lot of funny dialog as they discuss their experiences with college. This leads to them building strong relationships which they then rely on to tackle the bigger issues.

Walker, Lee, Crivelli, Mahallati, McBride. Liz Lauren Photo

Isa Arciniegas (Fun Home, The Wolves) is excellent as Diana, the strong girl who is really looking forward to learning self-defense and working with guns. Ariana Mahallati is great as the innocent and cheery friend of Diana. Andrew San Miguel is so good as the awkward girl nervously making her way through class. Anna Crivelli is strong as the main teacher, who has something to hide. Netta Walker is complicated as the secondary teacher, who has a lot to say about her sexual preferences. Jayson Lee is very funny as the fraternity brother who is having a lot of trouble finding a girlfriend. Lastly, Ryan McBride is hilarious as the Andy Sandberg type fraternity brother who is naturally charismatic and good with the ladies.

The entire play is great except for the ending. It kind of comes out of nowhere and doesn’t really fit the tone of the play and they should consider changing it.

Fantastic Set! Phillip Phillips at City Winery Chicago (January 30, 2020)

Tonight at City Winery is an intimate evening with Phillip Phillips and Errol Cooney on acoustic guitars.

Early on, he says that the song “Maneater” has a scary title, but it isn’t a scary song. So, he decided to make a scary version, which he goes on to play. It is more creepy and spooky than the original. It’s a bit unusual to have a cover so early in the set, but he makes it work.

“Home” is a crowd favorite. “Cause I’m gonna make this place your home.” The beautiful lyrics along with the great guitar playing are a great fit.

“Ramble On” by Led Zeppelin is a great choice for a cover in this set. Phillips sounds excellent playing and singing this song.

During “Unpack Your Heart”, they launch into an excellent extended jam reminiscent of a Dave Matthews Band show and the similarities don’t end there.

It was a fantastic set and everyone left with a smile on their face. He is very charming and really knows how to handle crowd. He could easily become as big as Dave Matthews and he is definitely talented enough to do it!

Some Fun – Miss Behave Gameshow at Bally’s Back Room (Open Run)

Name that tune is one of the first games. They play a song and have everyone shout out the name of the song and the artist. However, they play the song so loud that nobody can hear, especially when the whole crowd is shouting. They should just have one or two people from each team guessing at a time with the music way less loud. For the opposites game, everyone can shout at once because they are all saying the same word.

A lot of small random challenges are fun, such as hit the red button, kickstarter, and skip the ad. It helps to sit in the front row for these.

The score keeping is completely arbitrary at times. One thing is worth 1 point, while another is 5. Giving points for asking for more points. If there was an actual prize and rules, it would be more fun.

This has the feel of a very small show at iO or Second City. Almost all the props and set is made of cardboard. This is fine for a $10 show, but seems kind of ridiculous for an $80 one.

Holy Cow! Cirque du Soleil Presents Zumanity at New York New York in Las Vegas (Open Run)

Fifteen minutes before the show is scheduled to start, Cassanova appears. He moves around the crowd flirting with the women and entertaining the crowd until he is dismissed by two women. They move around the crowd flirting with the men and handing out strawberries. Both of these acts are very funny and should not be missed.

zumanity3

A muscled man descends from the ceiling with a D shaped device. The straight part is a metal bar and the curved portion is a chain. Towards the end of the performance, he raises up about 40 ft holding onto the bar and tilting his head back over the chain. He then removes his hands and holds himself up only by his head. This is insane! He then repositions himself upside down and suspends himself with just one foot. Holy cow!

zumanity2

Later on, a giant glass bowl rises from beneath the stage filled with water and two women. They proceed to display impressive balancing feats combined with great contortions.

Those are the three highlights of the show. Zumanity is 18+ due to some of the performers appearing topless. As with all cirque shows, the space is quite small and there is no bad seat.

Alternately Delightful and Disappointing – Mandy Patinkin at the Chicago Theatre (January 23, 2020)

It might be that you are a fan of Mandy Patinkin’s from “Homeland” or “The Princess Bride,” but chances are that if you’re buying tickets to see him in concert, you’re more concerned with his Broadway credits. But Patinkin is more than Georges Seurat, Ché and Archibald Craven. So if you were just hoping to hear his show tunes, the show will alternately delight and disappoint.

The show confuses, particularly with “From The Air,” a spoken word piece from Laurie Anderson, an avant-garde performance artist. The lights dim and Patinkin sits and delivers this piece that makes you wonder if you are at a bad college performance that you forgot to get high for. “A Few Words in Defense of Our Country” is another low light.

Also bizarre is “Refugees/Song of the Titanic.” Patinkin sings beautifully in Yiddish against a backdrop of videos and photos of refugees, including footage of those who have drowned. After the song, Patinkin sings two Sondheim songs from “Company” and then the show is over. The effect is jarring.

You have witnessed something incredibly painful and are left with no context. Patinkin works with the International Rescue Committee (https://www.rescue.org/mandy-patinkin) to “bring global attention to the ongoing refugee crisis.” But he shares nothing of his work. There is no intro nor lead-out. And following it up with “Sorry/Grateful” and “Being Alive”? Not the right choice.

This aside, he is still Mandy Patinkin. Hearing him sing “Sunday” is alone worth the price of the ticket and “Being Alive,” though oddly placed, was magnificent. And though the song choices of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Over the Rainbow” are hokey, it’s still a joy to hear him sing them.

But still, you’ll leave the theater wondering. . . what the hell did I just see?

Passionate! Broadway in Chicago Presents Once On This Island at the Cadillac Palace (Through February 2, 2020)

There’s always a worry when a show tours that it will lose its energy once it leaves New York. The original cast is gone, the set is simpler and the venues are much larger. Certainly, for the revival of “Once On This Island” which played at the very intimate Circle in the Square in Manhattan and is now playing at the Cadillac Palace in Chicago, this last concern is no trifling matter. Compare a capacity of 840 to 2,344!

And so while it is inescapable that the tour is a different production in many ways, it was a delight to discover that the passion is the same.

“Once On This Island” tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who falls in love with Daniel, a descendant of the French aristocracy. They meet when Daniel is injured in a car accident. Ti Moune nurses him back to health and when he returns to his side of the island, she follows him and enters his world. While Ti Moune and Daniel are learning about each other, the gods of earth, water, love and death are watching and intervening. They are challenging each other to see if love is stronger than death, based on what happens to the two lovers.

The highlights of the show are Courtnee Carter in the role of Ti Moune and Cassondra James as Erzulie (Goddess of Love). Carter brings a wide-eyed innocence to the role that allows you to sympathize with the character, rather than roll your eyes about a modern retelling of “The Little Mermaid” where once again, a girl makes grand sacrifices for a boy she has just met. But for a hint of her strength and defiance, preview her vocals on “Waiting For Life”:

Once on This Island

James also had big shoes to fill, stepping into a role played by Lea Salonga on Broadway. But her gentle “The Human Heart” was exquisite. And perhaps the one moment that truly makes you forget that you’re seeing the show in a large theater as opposed to a small theater in the round is during “Ti Moune’s Dance,” a pivotal (and lively!) moment of the show that the cast handles deftly.

Incredible! V – The Ultimate Variety Show at V Theater in the Miracle Mile Shops of Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino (Open Run)

Wally Eastwood – Juggler

This man can juggle. I mean, really juggle. He juggled about 4 ping pong balls using his mouth to launch the balls up. It was insane. Later in the show, he brought out a piano that plays a note whenever he drops a ball onto it. He very impressively plays “Fur Elise” by Beethoven using about 6 balls. It was truly incredible.

Iouri & Gabor – Ultimate Balancing Act

This impressive duo features a lot of incredible balancing positions. In one of them, the man on top uses just one hand on the other’s head to balance himself. The most grand one was when the man on the bottom held the other one upside down with their heads back to back, just using their shoulders. It was unbelievable!

Russ Merlin – Prop Comedian

11

Russ Merlin begins his show by trying to find four men that are 5’11” by looking at the seated audience. He successfully finds 3 and the 4th is 6’1”. Not too shabby. He then invites them all on stage. He goes on to put very funny masks on all them and teach them all some basic actions to do when he taps them on the shoulder. In essence, he turns them into his puppets and it makes for a very funny show.

The Skating Aratas

On about a 4 foot wide circular platform, the performers spin up to 45 mph on roller skates. The man picks up the woman and spins her around just by her legs. Then, to increase the intensity, they use a figure 8 device that puts a loop over each of their heads. He then proceeds to spin her around without using his hand in a fantastic finale. The crowd gave them a standing ovation!
