Review: Relentless Theatre Group Presents Henry Johnson at Victory Gardens Theater (Through May 4, 2025)

Henry Johnson is asking his boss to hire one of his old friends. This friend needs to get a job as a condition of his parole. The boss questions Henry as he tries to understand why he would ask such a big favor for a friend that he wasn’t that close to. The scene changes, and suddenly Henry is in prison without explanation. He’s talking with another prisoner who is warning him about the counseler that he is talking to.

This David Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross, Wag The Dog) play is hard to follow. A lot happens in-between scenes that is not clearly explained. Also, they have seats on the stage, but it’s not a good idea to sit there unless you like to have the actors face away from you.

The cast is very talented. Keith Kupferer (The Great LeapIf I Forget) is superb as the blue collar prison guard with unclear intentions. Thomas Gibson (Dharma and Greg) is great as the prisoner trying to teach Henry about manipulation. Al’ Jaleel McGhee (To Catch a FishBreach) is very good as the skeptical boss. Lastly, Daniil Krimer is sold as the straight man of the play, Henry Johnson.

A film version starring Shia LaBeouf is planned to be released online on May 9, 2025. See the trailer here: https://youtu.be/_5u0INUpDBU?si=olNb6tjdfzymKALm

Very Loud! Sunny Afternoon featuring the music of The Kinks at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater (Through April 27, 2025)

This is the story of the Ravens, who become The Kinks. It begins in London where they first gain a following. They set up their first record deal with four managers taking 10% each. Soon afterwards, they embark on their first tour of the US. The Teamsters and other unions immediately demand they pay their dues. At first they comply, but eventually they refuse. This results in them being banned from playing in America.

The choreography by Adam Cooper is excellent. The dancers bring the stage and the whole theatre to life.

The sound of the full concert scenes is much too loud for a musical. They hand out earplugs before the show, which work great for the loud parts, but make it too quiet for all the other scenes. Decreasing the volume of the concerts would be the best solution, but as it is, something easily removable such as noise-cancelling headphones is the best option.

The music is the highlight of the show. They split their most popular song (over 380 million streams on Spotify), “You Really Got Me”, into two parts of the show.

The final concert scene has “Lola”, which they releasd in 1970. “Well, I’m not the world’s most masculine man / But I know what I am and I’m glad I’m a man /  And so is Lola!” This is such a fantastic song that Weird Al Yankovich released a fantastic parody, “Yoda”, in 2009.

Overall, it’s a very fun experience that showcases the music of The Kinks.

Very Dramatic! The Book of Grace at Steppenwolf Theatre (Through May 18, 2025)

A young man comes home to attend his father’s medal ceremony for his work as a border patrol officer. They don’t get along very well. The father used to beat his mother and threaten her with a large hole he had dug in the backyard. The father is now controlling his new wife, Grace, with the same tactics.

Suzan-Lori Parks (Topdog / Underdog) has written a a very dark and dramatic play. It takes unexpected turns that keep the audience on the edge of their seats. The first act is a bit slow, but it really picks up in the second.

Namir Smallwood is great as the son who has a secret plan for this visit home. Brian Marable is superb in the tough role of the father, who lives by strict military roles. Zainab Jah is excellent as the stepmother, who is so kind and caring towards everyone.

Unique! The Listeners at Lyric Opera (Through April 11, 2025)

Claire is a suburban high school teacher. She hears a constant hum that really plagues her. She eventually learns that one of her students also hears the hum. He invites her to a community meeting of people that also hear the hum. As time goes on, it becomes clear that it’s more than just a support group.

This opera is based on an original story by Jord Tannahill. The libretto was written by Royce Vavrek and the music was created by Missy Mazzoli. The result is a very unique opera. It has moments of hilarious modern humor. It also has very dramatic operatic scenes. This production includes scenes with video cameras on stage where they project the captured video on large screens. One scene features people commenting on the video, which is hilarious.

It’s a bit hard to hear, even on the main floor. There is an announcement over the speakers before the show starts that is very easy to understand, but then the speakers are turned off for the performance. In the meantime, listening devices are available at the coat check for free. It would also be helpful to have the surtitles be much lower.

Kyle Ketelson is superb as the charismatic leader. After seeing his great performance, it may be hard to see him play anything other than a cult leader! Daniela Mack is great as his number 2, fully supporting his efforts.  Nicole Heaston is excellent as Claire, who displays a great range of emotions on stage. Jonas Hacker is great as the student who pushes Claire to seek help with the meetings.

Overall, it’s a very interesting production that definitely has the audience talking afterwards.

Cost of a ticket: $99 (Main Floor Sides)

Excellent! Glen Phillips from Toad the Wet Sprocket at City Winery Chicago (April 3, 2025)

After playing two songs from his solo career, Glen Phillips says “Hey, isn’t this the guy from Toad?” He then launches into his first Toad the Wet Sprocket song, “Windmills”, from their 1994 album, Dulcinea

Soon afterwards, he plays “Walk on the Ocean” from the 1991 album, fear. “Walk on the ocean / Step on the stones / Flesh becomes water / Wood becomes bone.” This is such a beautiful song. It would fit right in with a Jars of Clay set.

His latest solo album is “There Is So Much Here” from 2022.  He plays a few songs from this album including “The Sound of Drinking” and “Call The Moondust”

There was some timely political commentary from the Toad song “Old Habits Die Hard”. “It’s a new day in the District / after 4 years off the rails / want some checks and balances / not just the same rich old white males”.

Towards the end of the night, he plays “All I Want”, which is Toad’s most popular song on Spotify with over 58 million streams. “All I want is to feel this way / To be this close, to feel the same / All I want is to feel this way / The evening speaks, I feel it say”.  It’s easy to hear why this one was such a big hit in the 90s.

During challenging times, music can provide comfort, hope and community, to help us carry on. Glen Philips delivered a little of  that to the people of Chicago tonight.

Review: Porchlight Music Theatre and Broadway in Chicago Present Titanique at Broadway Playhouse (Through July 13, 2025)

In a parody of Titanic, Celine Dion tells the story of the movie with songs. She has changed a lot of the plot and added a whole bunch of musical and movie references. For example, there are many jokes about the actor Victor Garber, who played the captain of the Titanic.

Many of the jokes are quite low brow. For example, when they say the ship is unsinkable, and then they say “foreshadowing!” Also, there is Rose telling Jack to get on the door, which clearly has room for 2 people. This article shows that it is highly unlikely they could both survive.

Eric Lewis (Understudy) (RentJersey Boys) is excellent as the Iceberg, especially the first time he sings. Jackson Evans (Anything GoesThe Boys in the Band) is good as Victor Garber and Luigi. Clare Kennedy McLaughlin has some funny moments as Celine. Maya Rowe and Adam Fane (Jersey BoysInto the Woods) are solid as Rose and Jack. Adrian Aguilar (Jersey Boys) is funny as Rose’s fiancé, who is secretly on Grindr. Rob Lindley is hilarious as Rose’s mother, especially when slapping everyone in the band and receiving an Oscar.

Hilarious! Morning After Grace at Raleigh Little Theatre (Through April 6, 2025)

A man and a woman meet while drunk at a funeral and then sleep together. They are both at the age where attending funerals is a common occurrence.  In the morning, they piece together why each of them was at the funeral, and how they know the woman who passed away. The woman also uncovers the mystery of why he has a closet full of dresses.

Carey Crim (Northwestern University Graduate) has written a very funny play about hooking up at a later stage in life. Many misunderstandings lead to big laughs. In the second half, it naturally transitions to more dramatic scenes as they deal with their pasts.

Paul Messinger is hilarious as the greiving man who has a lot on his plate and is full of snark. Christine Rogers is also so funny as the woman who easily gives it right back to him. Gus Hummings is superb as the neighbor who slowly pieces together what is going on.

Very Sweet! The Trip to Bountiful at Theatre Raleigh (Through April 6, 2025)

It’s 1953 in Houston, Texas. An elderly lady dreams of making one last trip to her childhood home in Bountiful, Texas. Her son and his wife don’t want her to go. They say she isn’t well enough to make the journey. But she sneaks off anyways to make the trip.

The first film version was released in 1953. The second version was released in 1985 starring Geraldine Page and John Heard. The most recent version was released in 2014 starring Cicely Tyson and Vanessa Williams.

It’s a very sweet story about returning to your childhood home and all the memories that come along with it.

Kim Zimmer (Guiding Light) is great as the woman who is very determined to make the trip. Dana Costello is great in the tough role as the wife. Will Ray is solid as her son, who is caught in between the two. Casey Wortham is very charming as the girl she meets at the bus station.

Exceptional! Immediate Family at Out Front Theatre in Atlanta (Through March 29, 2025)

The adult children of a family all come back to their childhood home on the south side of Chicago. They have come to celebrate the wedding of one of the brothers. All of the siblings are very competitive with each other. This is well displayed as they play bid whist, a game similar to spades. Also, deeply held secrets are revealed along with an unexpected guest that stir up a lot of drama.

Immediate Family first premiered at the Goodman Theatre in 2012. The Center Theatre Group in LA produced a version in 2015.

Paul Oakley Stovall has written a fantastic play with non-stop humor and drama. The audience was laughing and hollering uncontrollably, especially in the second half.  The entire cast is fantastic. They have great chemistry as an ensemble, and they feel like a real family.

A Very Funny Farce! The Gods of Comedy at Aurora Theatre (Through April 13, 2025)

A man discovers a lost manuscript for a play. He gives it to his coworker to hold on to, but she loses it. She calls upon Greek Gods to help her. Dionysus and Thalia come to help her, but things don’t go very smoothly.

Ken Ludwig has written a very funny farce. It’s old-fashioned and family friendly. It was first produced as a co-production between McCarter Theatre Center for the Performing Arts (Princeton, NJ) and The Old Globe Theatre (San Diego) in 2019.

Brennan Kelleher is hilarious in his many roles, always very cheeky and often stealing the show. Alexandra Ficken is so charming as the bookish coworker very focused on finding the manuscript. Brad Raymond and Kate Fahrner are both so funny and exuberant as the gods. They have great chemistry together. Rachel Frawley, Christopher Hampton, and Suzanne Roush are solid in their supporting roles.
